After the devastating earthquake of 1755, which nearly obliterated the town, the Marquis of Pombal saw an opportunity to implement his Enlightenment ideas for reconstruction. Inspired by the reconstruction of the Baixa Pombalina in Lisbon, he ordered Vila Real de Santo António to be redesigned in the anti-seismic neoclassical style, making it a model of modernity and functionality for the time.
The heart of the town is its main square, a large and harmonious space where the town hall and the main church are located. This space is decorated with the distinctive Portuguese pavement, whose geometric patterns reflect the influence of Pombaline urbanism. The streets radiate from this square in an orthogonal layout, typical of the grid style that characterized the planned cities of the period. This type of design not only promoted organization and efficiency, but also facilitated rapid reconstruction and resilience to future natural disasters.
